Questions and Answers (FAQ) – Architectural Model Making
What is an architectural model used for?
An architectural model is generally used to present a building, building complex, including all outdoor facilities and surrounding buildings to clients or better showcase the project.
What are the differences between urban planning/environmental models and competition models?
Typically, urban planning or environmental models are designed to represent the surroundings. They don’t contain as much detail as the buildings and surroundings but show the volume of the environment. In contrast, competition models are built more precisely and with greater detail. They include building projections, floors, slanted roofs, and sometimes openings like windows and doors. The level of detail depends on the scale and the purpose of the presentation.
What are the differences between a presentation model and an architectural model?
A presentation model is usually built in scales of 1:100, 1:200, or 1:50. It is a detailed model with facades that are scaled accurately to reflect reality.
In which scales can a model be built?
Models can be built in any scale – from 1:1 to 1:10,000. It’s important to clarify and understand the purpose of the architectural model before determining the scale.
How can an architectural model be better presented or additionally equipped?
Depending on the budget, size, scale, and purpose, an architectural model can be further equipped with a plexiglass cover (for protection from curious viewers and dust), LED lighting, and a pedestal. LED lighting can be equipped with one or more group switches, as well as warm or cold lighting. The pedestal can be made from lightweight metal construction on wheels or from painted MDF.
How does architectural model making generally work?
(1) Qualified inquiry, (2) Follow-up questions or consultation, (3) Offer, (4) Client approval, (5) Usually, the first invoice with an initial deposit, (6) Project planning and construction of a 3D model, (7) Coordination of the 3D model with the client, (7) Approval, (8) Creation of CAD files for production (CNC milling, laser, or 3D printing), (9) Production, (10) Delivery and handover, (11) Final invoice.
How long does it take to build an architectural model?
- In general, an architectural model is built within 4 to 12 weeks. The price and duration of building a model depend on the data provided (2D or 3D drawings), whether they are complete or incomplete, the duration of coordination for 3D perspectives, complexity (level of detail), and the size of the model being created.
What is important to consider when making a qualified inquiry?
- It is important to consider the following points: (1) scale and size of the model, (2) input data (2D or 3D drawings), (3) level of detail, (4) delivery date or deadline, (5) purpose of your presentation, (6) please describe the materiality or desired appearance of your model.
What influences the price of the model?
- (1) Scale and size of the model, (2) input data (2D or 3D drawings), (3) level of detail, (4) time factor or deadline, (5) drawing the missing data, (6) incorporation of LED lighting, (7) construction of the plexiglass cover, (8) construction of the pedestal/base.
What techniques are used to build a classic architectural model?
- A classic architectural model is built using CNC milling, laser cutting, and 3D printing. Depending on the level of detail and complexity, the model maker decides which technique will be used to create the model. Pure 3D printing for a complex and high-quality architectural model is currently not feasible.
What is the difference between 3D printing and a classic architectural model?
- 3D printing is intended for simple models/surfaces and shapes. It is possible to print all details or models more easily (with less manpower). It’s important to note that 3D printing leaves printing marks and is not suitable for everyday use or all types of model representation. In contrast, a conventional architectural model is much more precise and detailed, created using CNC milling, laser cutting, etching techniques, and handwork. Only for the creation of some details is 3D printing used.
How much does an architectural model cost?
- Our high-quality and detailed architectural models typically cost between 5,000 and 10,000 EUR (net). However, all models are calculated on a project basis and are priced individually. The pricing of a model is explained above.
